Putting Off Books You Actually Want To Read: Let’s Talk Bookish
Let's Talk Bookish banner

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion where we discuss certain topics based on prompts allocated for each Friday of the week. You basically share your opinions and get into the conversation by visiting each other’s posts. You can find the March schedule here or here.

Today’s topic is Putting off books you actually want to read.

This was suggested by Jillian @ The Bookish Butterfly. I haven’t done Let’s Talk Bookish posts in a while. I’m excited to started off with a relatively easier and more personal topic this week!

My reading habits have changed a lot this year because a) I started accepting ARCs and b) I got more serious about blogging, meaning more reviews.

DO YOU EVER PUT OFF THE BOOKS YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO BE READING? WHAT DO YOU END UP READING INSTEAD?

Yes, I do. I try to dust off maybe 2 ARCs on average each month, so sometimes I prioritise those over my physical TBR. I’m very selective about my ARCs though so I don’t usually end up reading something I do not wanna read.

WHY DO YOU PUT OFF THE BOOKS THAT YOU WOULD RATHER READ FOR OTHER STORIES?

To me, this situation means I’m slogging through an ARC that I’m not enjoying. My personal policy is that if it’s an ARC I will finish it no matter what. Unlike reading a book I bought for pleasure, accepting an ARC is an agreement to me: I will review this book in exchange for this free copy.

If I don’t like the book, I believe it’s my responsibility to give it 100% as the reviewer anyway and discuss it. This is also why I hardly DNF books!

DO YOU TREAT READING BOOKS YOU’RE EXCITED FOR AS A REWARD?

Honestly, I have never thought of it this way! My physical TBR is full of books I love as well those I don’t. I’m pretty strict about reading everything, which means I don’t like to ‘discriminate’ by favouring my more anticipated reads! Is that weird? Haha!

So, I do put off reading books I have been wanting to read but it hardly happens. It’s usually because of my list of ARCs waiting to be dusted off their digital shelves. I’m also the weird sort that likes to give all my books an ‘equal chance’ at being read. I don’t really make any TBRs. My motto is to read as many of my physical books as possible. My Kindle library is more of a secondary priority.

Do you end up shelving books on your physical TBR if you lose interest before you read them? Do you have a system in place for your reading? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I tend to order my TBR by order of my excitement level to read them. I rarely lose interest in the books on my physical TBR, but when I do, I realize then I probably will never read them and remove them from my shelves.

    1. I envy the ability to remove books from your physical TBR 😅 Honestly my TBR would have ended up a lot more manageable if I just did that! 🙈

  2. It’s the curse of a book blogger to always be putting off books you want to read, sad but true🤔

    1. Haha that’s true! I didn’t realise it till I got serious about book blogging this year! 😂

  3. Omg I discovered another sri Lankan book blogger I’m ridiculously happy😂 this is a great post!!!! I’ve yet to start requesting arcs but I’m planning to one day when I have more time😊

    1. OMG HI!!! This is so exciting!!! It’s so great to meet you!!! 😁💛💛💛

    1. Being a mood reader, I aim to finish the physical books on my shelves in whatever order catches my fancy. 😅 I can never stick to a monthly TBR these days 😂

  4. This is truly the story of my life, I am SO bad at doing this! Basically every single physical book I own takes a back seat to the absurd amount of ARCs I request. I am much like you in that I make them a priority, and I review *everything* I request (that said, I won’t finish I book I am really hating sometimes- I have only DNFed 10 books in my whole reading life!- but I just did recently, and in these cases, it’s usually because I am not feeling the book, but I also don’t think it deserves a negative review? So I just… call it a day hah.) Anyway, because I am a ridiculous person, I have usually around 12-15 ARCs (mostly eARCs at this point) a month. Which… doesn’t leave much, if any, time for “my” books. So I put them off almost all the time. It’s sad, but here we are. Frankly, I am also trash at picking which books to read when left to my own devices, so it probably works out better this way hah.

    1. Omg 12-15 ARCs is an insane amount! I always wondered how you posted so many reviews! 😂 I usually manage maybe 3 ARCs at most each month 😅 But yes! ARCs always end up being the priority each month! 😅
