The Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted by Freda’s Voice where every Friday you pick a book and turn to page 56 or 56%, and select a sentence or a few, as long as it’s not a spoiler. For the full rules, visit the page HERE.
This time on First Line Friday, I’m going to share one of my favourites! I bought the book quite recently but I watched the STARZ series since it came out (on Netflix)!
Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you’re reading.
First Line
It wasn’t a very likely place for disappearances, at least at first glance.
How come I never realised how good this first line? Now I just love it!
Page 56 Snippet
I dashed down the hill after him but found him already sitting up among the quivering stems by the time I reached the bottom.
“Are you all right?” I asked, though I could see that he was.
“I think so.” He passed a hand dazedly over his brow, smoothing back the dark hair. “What did I trip over?”
“This.” I help up a sardine tin, discarded by some earlier visitor. “One of the menaces of civilization.”
Book Reveal
What if your future was the past?
1946, and Claire Randall goes to the Scottish Highlands with her husband Frank. It’s a second honeymoon, a chance to learn how war has changed them and to re-establish their loving marriage.
But one afternoon, Claire walks through a circle of standing stones and vanishes into 1743, where the first person she meets is a British army officer – her husband’s six-times great-grandfather.Unfortunately, Black Jack Randall is not the man his descendant is, and while trying to escape him, Claire falls into the hands of a gang of Scottish outlaws, and finds herself a Sassenach – an outlander – in danger from both Jacobites and Redcoats.
Marooned amid danger, passion and violence, her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.
Why You Should Read It
- The best time travel romance I have ever read!
- There’s a great TV adaptation you can binge on (waiting for season 6!).
- Even the side characters are just too good.
- Gabaldon has such great writing, I can get lost in it!
- It’s an ongoing saga, so you won’t run out of content anytime soon!
- It’s set in Scotland, so why aren’t you picking it up yet?
Here’s my review!

I have the fifth book in the series sitting on my shelf but I haven’t cracked it. It is so daunting in size. My quotes are from Mr. Mercedes
