Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion where we discuss certain topics based on prompts allocated for each Friday of the week. You basically share your opinions and get into the conversation by visiting each other’s posts. You can find the September schedule here or here.
Today’s Let’s Talk Bookish topic is Cut and Paste Character Archetypes, which was suggested by Dani @ Literary Lion.
It is a relief to be back with another discussion post because I did not think I would be able to do another one with the way life has been throwing work my way! I drew a complete blank about what character archetypes I wanna talk about at first, but I slept on it and a few really popped into my mind, so let’s do this!
ARE THERE ANY CHARACTERS YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE SEEING OVER AND OVER AGAIN RECENTLY? THE SAME LOVE INTEREST IN MULTIPLE ROMANCES? THE SAME PROTAGONIST OVER AND OVER?
As someone who loves the chance to dress up and attend events, I miss seeing more protagonists who are like me. I always see protagonists, usually female, who get upset about having to dress up and attend balls and dance with strangers. I used to be able to relate, but as I grew older I grew to like the whole experience of prepping for events and attending them, so now I get pretty frustrated when I keep coming across characters who can’t stand even putting on a dress!
Instead, I loved these characters:
- Poppy Balfour in From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
- Piper Bellinger in It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey
- Noni Blake in It’s Been a Pleasure, Noni Blake by Claire Christian
I actually love the archetype but I think we should have more main characters/protagonists like this rather than pushing this personality on to the side characters! I wanna see a confident, snarky, badass protagonist in my stories more often! I see these side character archetypes so often and I get so disappointed when they don’t get their own spotlight!
Instead, I loved these characters:
- Riven Hawthorne in City of Shattered Light by Claire Winn
- Elena Ravence in The Boy with Fire by Aparna Verma
- The Destroyer in Mercurial by Naomi Hughes
- Ren Kolins in Of Silver and Shadow by Jennifer Gruenke
I know alpha male love interests are a huge thing among romance lovers, but lately I have been leaning more towards the caring, sensitive types who actually push their lover to be the best they can be. I see many alpha male love interests in a lot of dark romances and mafia-type romance, which is probably why I don’t read them as often. I also want to read about the protagonist fending for themselves, to see that growth away from their love interest. But I am not against a love interest who is willing to rip out hearts and throats for their girl (wink wink)!
Instead, I loved these characters:
- Hawke Flynn in From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
- Adam Carlsen in The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
- Brendan Taggert in It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey
- Michael Phan in The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
- Will Sumner in Beautiful Player by Christina Lauren
What are some character archetypes you will never get tired of seeing in books?

I like how you included characters from books that were different to the character archetypes that you were tired of seeing 🙂 I think I would agree with all of the ones that you mentioned, especially the one about side characters. It’s like they’re so cool, but then they often get a bad ending and are just brushed aside.
Thanks, Haley! I really thought those characters deserve a shoutout! 😁 And IKR! Those side characters deserve better! 😭
