Greek Mythology Retellings: #5OnMyTBR

#5OnMyTBR is a new weekly meme hosted by E. @Local Bee Hunter’s Nook and you can learn more about it in her announcement post. #5OnMyTBR takes place every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR. You can find each week’s prompts on here or come up with your own.

Today’s prompt: Retelling

In my opinion, ‘retelling’ is a vast genre that I could spend days listing out books on, so I narrowed it down to a sub-genre that I love but haven’t read in forever: GREEK MYTHOLOGY RETELLINGS! Who doesn’t love some godly action and some demi-god heroes?

So, here are the top 5 Greek mythology retellings on my TBR that I’m really excited about!

The Covenant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

This series is definitely the most highly anticipated Greek mythology retelling in my books. THIS IS JLA MEETS GREEK MYTHS, PEOPLE! That is two of my favourite things mashed into one! Think of it as a high stakes college setting Greek retelling with tonnes of romance, action and plot twists.

Circe by Madeline Miller

I’ll be honest. I don’t know much about Circe besides the fact that Odysseus dropped by her island. But this book gives Circe center stage ,and gives her a voice and story. Also, this won a Goodreads Choice Award in 2018!

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

I have heard bits and pieces about Achilles and Patroclus, but what really drew me in was the fanart! Achilles is a true favourite hero of mine, and I am so glad Miller said screw it and gave him a love story.

A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes

This book is necessary. I have read many Trojan War stories and kept wondering where all the women were at. Sure, they’re mentioned but where are their voices? This all-female retelling of the Trojan War is something I have needed since I was kid reading all those Trojan War books in my school library.

Mythos: A Retelling of the Myths of Ancient Greece by Stephen Fry

Hear me out. I have Stephen Fry praised as a great author but I kept looking at Mythos and wondering ‘do I need retellings of all the myths in one go?’ Because that’s what this book sounds like. But people are loving it! Why are people loving it? So, obviously, I need to read this and find out…

One more thing I love about Greek retellings? The stunning covers!

  1. Love this list! We are obsessed with Greek retellings and love Song of Achilles and A Thousand Ships so so much! I really hope you like them. We also recommend Silence of the Girls. It’s Briseis’ story during the Trojan War. If you end up liking A Thousand Ships this book is the perfect one to follow it with. – Amber

    1. Thanks a lot for the rec, Amber! I’ll definitely check it out! Sounds interesting already!
